At a Glance

The NASAC Women for Science (WfS) programme is a vital, collaborative initiative funded by the Inter Academy Partnership (IAP). Led by a dedicated WfS Working Group of African women scientists, its core mission is to dismantle barriers and champion the increased participation and leadership of African women within national science academies and the broader science, technology, and innovation (STI) landscape.

African women scientists continue to face significant cultural and systemic obstacles in their career advancement, both in public institutions and private industry. The WfS programme recognizes that overcoming these challenges requires a united front. We work proactively with employers, educational institutions, and scientists themselves to identify solutions and embed best practices. This includes championing essential strategies like mentorship programmes and showcasing powerful role models to inspire the next generation.

Our Strategy: Applying the Gender Lens

The WfS Working Group serves as a crucial convening platform, applying a dedicated gender lens to science and technology across Africa. We achieve this by:

  1. Sharing Experiences & Priorities: Facilitating dialogue among academies and women scientists to build shared understanding and strategies.

  2. Building Gender Capacity: Strengthening the ability of academies and institutions to integrate gender perspectives and support women scientists.

  3. Enhancing Involvement & Recognition: Actively promoting the input, recognition, and visibility of women scientists within academies and national discourse.

  4. Fostering Networks: Creating vital connections for support, collaboration, and advocacy.

  5. Inspiring Future Generations: Encouraging gender mainstreaming in science education and curricula to motivate schoolgirls to pursue science careers through relatable role models.
