Opinion Paper on Gender Perspective of Covid – 19 Pandemic in Africa
Summary
This opinion paper explores the gendered impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in Africa, where the crisis has exacerbated existing inequalities. While the pandemic has affected health and economic stability globally, women have faced disproportionate challenges, including greater income loss, increased unpaid care work, and heightened exposure to Gender-Based Violence (GBV). The paper highlights how lockdown measures, school closures, and restricted movement have intensified women’s vulnerability, limiting their decision-making power and access to support systems. With African countries enforcing various containment measures, the study underscores the urgent need for gender-sensitive policies and programs to address these socio-economic disparities and mitigate the long-term consequences of the pandemic.
