Decarbonisation of Transport in Africa: Opportunities, Challenges and Policy
Summary
Decarbonisation of Transport in Africa
The Decarbonisation of Transport in Africa programme is a comprehensive initiative aimed at assessing the challenges and opportunities in reducing carbon emissions from the transport sector across the continent. This programme is a collaborative effort between the Network of African Science Academies (NASAC) and the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), supported by the Climate Works Foundation and the African Climate Foundation. It builds on previous studies and insights from the November 2021 workshop co-organized by NASAC and IAP.
Background and Importance
The transport sector is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for nearly a quarter of global emissions. In Africa, transport plays a critical role in economic growth, as emphasized in Agenda 2063, the African Union’s long-term strategic framework. However, with rapid urbanization, increasing motorization rates, and economic expansion, Africa’s transport emissions are expected to grow significantly. Addressing this challenge requires urgent and sustainable interventions to reduce carbon emissions while ensuring efficient, accessible, and affordable transport systems.
Key Focus Areas
The programme examines various aspects crucial to transport decarbonisation, including:
✔ Policy and Regulatory Frameworks: Reviewing existing transport policies and advocating for reforms that support clean energy transition.
✔ Technology and Innovation: Exploring electric vehicles (EVs), renewable energy integration, and mass transit improvements.
✔ Institutional and Technical Capacity: Strengthening governance structures and developing expertise in sustainable transport.
✔ Financial Mechanisms: Identifying funding opportunities for green infrastructure, EV adoption, and low-carbon initiatives.
✔ Social and Economic Considerations: Ensuring equitable access to transport and creating job opportunities in clean energy sectors.
