Annual Meeting of African Science Academies (AMASA 2023) Report

Summary

The AMASA 2023 conference, held in partnership with the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), GenderInSITE, and the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), focused on the theme “Integrating Gender Equality in STEM Education in Africa: The Role of Science Academies.” The event provided a platform for discussing key findings from a report on Gender Equality at African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) institutions and exploring their implications for NASAC member academies. Additionally, the discussions highlighted best practices and lessons learned in advancing gender mainstreaming within science academies across Africa.

Bringing together over 50 participants from across Africa and beyond, AMASA 2023 convened a diverse group of stakeholders, including NASAC Member Academies, early career researchers, senior academics, potential member academies, gender specialists from African universities, and leaders from both the public and private sectors. The insights and recommendations from the deliberations aim to strengthen gender integration efforts within STEM education and research institutions, fostering greater inclusivity in the scientific community.
