ACADEMY SYNERGY BUILDING SESSIONS (ASBS) – STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS

The first session took place virtually on 7 March 2024 under the topic “Strategic Planning Process” and had an audience of approximately 30 participants. The topic – which was proposed by the member academies – provided insights into the process of strategic planning and the significance of periodic review and update of the strategic plans.

The 2024 ASBS topics focus on building relationships, sharing best practices, and providing peer learning opportunities, thus enriching and developing professional and social interactions within the network.

The session presentation under the topic was delivered by Dr. Doyin Odubanjo and Angie Olanioekun from the Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS). Using the NAS experience, the speakers highlighted the systematic steps in the strategic planning process. The audience had the opportunity to share their perspectives and comments on the process and further clarification was availed as needed.

Recommendations arising from the meeting were as follows:

  1. Member academies to:
    • Review their strategic plans periodically and systematically.
    • Develop their strategic plans based on SMART goals.
    • Access the NASAC developed Strategic Plan development guidelines for guidance.

  1. NASAC to:
    • Take stock of the number of members with up-to-date strategic plans.
    • Develop a strategic plan template to aid members in developing one for their science academy.
