Academy Synergy Building Sessions (ASBS) on Corporate Governance Framework
The Network of African Science Academies (NASAC) organized a second webinar of Academy Synergy Building Sessions (ASBS) focusing on the Corporate Governance Framework on 6th June 2024. The webinar aimed to provide insights into the principles, practices, and importance of corporate governance in the context of African science academies.
The specific objectives of webinar were to define corporate governance and its relevance to African science academies and to explore the role of governance in enhancing transparency, accountability, and sustainability. Dr. Melusi Thwala of Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) – who was the main speaker, shared his experiences and best practices by offering practical insights for implementing robust governance structures. His presentation illustrated key elements of an effective corporate governance framework, such as:
- Board structure and composition
- Roles and responsibilities of board members
- Ethical leadership and corporate culture
- Stakeholder engagement
- Risk management and internal controls
- compliance and regulatory oversight
He urged the participants to adopt governance frameworks tailored to their own needs and contexts, to network and collaborate with each other to learn and share proven practices in good corporate governance.
During the session, participants agreed to the following:
- Conduct governance assessments and develop action plans for continuous improvement.
- NASAC to facilitate follow-up sessions and workshops to support the implementation of governance frameworks
- Members to share their experiences and best practice to enhance collective learning and development.
In conclusion, the NASAC ASBS webinar successfully highlighted the critical role of corporate governance in strengthening African science academies, influencing national policy through networking with key stakeholders and government representatives, thus paving the way for enhanced accountability, innovation, and sustainable growth. The next ASBS webinar will take place on 5th September 2024 under the topic “Conflict Resolution Strategies”.
